Steps to a Healthier Rockland County

This program, based in Rockland County, NY, provides the community with access to over a dozen nutrition presentations on topics ranging from food allergies to dining out. A registered dietitian who also provides food demonstrations to the community to promote healthy eating runs the program.

Let’s Move!

Launched by First Lady Michelle Obama, the Let’s Move campaign focuses on ending childhood obesity through community outreach programs that encourage children to exercise and eat a healthy balanced diet. The program reaches cities, towns, counties, schools, faith-based organizations, museums, child care facilities, clinics and more.

Kids Walk to School

The Kids Walk to School program was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help improve the health of school-aged children through physical activity. The program encourages children to increase daily physical activity by walking or biking to and from school in adult chaperoned groups. The website for the program provides several resources to help initiate and promote the program in your community.

Kent State Nutrition Outreach Program

The KSU Community outreach program serves the entire university community as well as residents of Portage County, OH. The program provides nutrition counseling, health assessments, and corporate wellness programs. The FLIGHT Program, a subsidiary of the outreach program, provides free nutrition education sessions focused on healthy food choices, label reading, and portion control.

BAM! Body and Mind

This online information resource from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is focused on kids ages 9-13 and provides information regarding health, nutrition, stress, and physical activity. The site is a resource that children can understand and guides kids to help make healthy choices through an interactive format.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation

The mission of this non-profit organization is to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity by 2015 through outreach to children in their homes, schools, doctor’s offices, and communities. The alliance partners with leaders in the food, beverage, fitness, and healthcare industries as part of creating a healthy environment for children at school, at home, and in the community. The alliance recently received a $23.2 million grant to continue to expand its Healthy Schools Program through 2014.

America on the Move

America on the Move is a free online pedometer walking program whose goal is to motivate people to walk an extra 2,000 steps per day and consume 100 fewer calories. The program can be used by individuals or groups. The extensive online community also provides resources and tools to assist people in achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  With over 500,000 users and 2,000 groups, it is easy to find a support system through this program.   Read more
